What does each section of the Event Listing mean?
Below you will find a sample event listing, with a description of each section broken down.
SPECIAL NOTE
This is where I will put special information related to this specific hike. Sometimes this is about a picnic following the hike, or special notes about the roads, or special equipment you should have. This is also where I will post information related to the third portion of our Custom Hike Rating System, which includes special circumstances (ie very rough trail, difficult footing, etc.)
Difficulty Level (ie Moderate (10))
This is where you can get an idea of how hard the hike will be, in PNW Leisure hiking terms. Our levels are Easy, Moderate, Challenging, Difficult, and Very Difficult. Occassionally, a hike will fall between the two (ie, Easy/Moderate (11). The number after the level (10 in this case) indicates exactly where the hike falls on our Custom Hike Rating System, which you can check out here.
Roundtrip Distance (ie 3.9 mi)
This is the total distance we expect to hike on this trek. This is an estimate, of course. This is one of the three portions used to calculate the level via our Custom Hike Rating System (distance, elevation gain, and special circumstances).
Elevation Gain (ie 600 ft)
Elevation gain refers to the sum of every gain in elevation throughout an entire trip. This is one of the three portions used to calculate the level via our Custom Hike Rating System (distance, elevation gain, and special circumstances).
Type of Hike (Loop, Out & Back, etc)
An Out & Back hike is one where we hike to a location, and then retrace our route on the return trip. A Loop hike is one where we travel in a loop, not retracing our previous route, or only retracing a small portion. Occasionaly hikes will consist of both an Out & Back and a Loop hike.
Nearby City
This will give you an idea on approximately where this hike is located.
GPS Coordinates
Coordinates for the trailhead, as close as possible (may not be exact). Can be used for more specific directions.
Season
This is the typically-open season for this particular hike.
Dogs Welcome (Yes, No, etc)
The answer here is usually Yes or No, with occassional information about special restrictions (ie, not on the beach, on-leash only, etc)
Fees (NW Forest Pass Required, Discover Pass, None Known, etc)
What fees you are expected to pay at each trailhead. For more information about the individual passes, please visit the FAQs to the left.
Hike Guide
This is where you'll find the guide for that event's hike which often includes a topo map.
Driving Directions
Straight from the guidebook or resource. If you need more specific directions, your best bet is to use maps.google.com or some other map website.
Description of Hike
A longer description of what to expect of the trail itself, as well as conditions and sights to see.
Description &/or History of Area &/or Destination
A great resource to learn a little bit more about the area we'll be traveling through.
